Work packages

Five areas of action (work packages) will be developed during the project.

This will build on existing initiatives, making use of information provided by diabetes associations and other stakeholders.
The outcomes of work packages contribute to prevention of serious, costly complications and improved quality of life of children and adolescents with diabetes and their carers.

   WP1        
Strenghten the knowledge base regarding the status of pediatric and adolescent diabetes and related care in the EU

The objective of work package 1 is to collect data to establish an overview of and develop conclusions on the number of children and adolescents affected by diabetes and existing relevant care programs and guidelines in Europe.

The following tasks will be carried out in order to work towards the specific objective and related deliverables:

  • Carry out all managerial tasks to run the work pakage effectively, including kick-off and other work package management meetings
  • Collect data per Member State by using the indicator collection of other EU initiatives on:

                               ♦   number of children and adolescents with diabetes per Member state and their diabetes complications

                               ♦   existing national care programmes adressing children and adolescents with diabetes
                                   (including secondary  prevention programs)

                               ♦   existing treatment guidelines for pediatric and adolescent diabetes

                               ♦   Analyse data leading to clear conclusions: identification of trends, possible relation between existing
                                    programmes and complications, what are the data gaps.

                               ♦   Compile information and conclusions into EU report

                               ♦   feed into overall dissemination strategy: report to be used for policy development and existing
                                   EU and WHO information sources.

The work package Leader (University Hopsital Motol/ CZ) and his work group will be responsible for publishing a final report which includes conclusions on status of diabetes in children and adolescents and related prevention and care programs.


   
   WP 2         
Assess existing guidelines to develop recommendations towards minimum, equal standards of treatment and care
  

The objective of work package 2 is responsible to enhance and promote equal standards of treatment and care in pediatric and adolescent diabetes in the EU.

The following tasks will be carried out in order to work towards the specific objective and related deliverables:

  • Carry out all managerial tasks to run the work package effectively, including kick-off and other work package management meetings
  • Access experiences with and impact of existing relevant guidelines
  • Identify good practice with respect to methods of treatment and care
  • Develop and agree good practice recommendations towards minimum standards with respect to methods of treatment and care
The work package Leader (Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg/ Lux) and his work group will be responsible for publishing a final report and conclusions with respect to experiences with and impact of existing guidelines as well as with good practice recommendations on minimum standards of pediatric treatment and care.



   WP3       
Good practice recommendations on age appropriate patient education for pediatric and adolescent diabetes

The objective of work package 3 is to improve the control of diabetes and to prevent complications by means of age appropriate patient education programs.

The following tasks will be carried out in order to work towards the specific objective and related deliverables:

  • Carry out all managerial tasks to run the work package effectively, including kick-off and other work package management meetings.
  • Identify existing age specific patient education programs in Europe, in the area of diabetes looking at specific age bands like preschool children, preadolescent school children (7 to 12 years), adolescents, or parents and other care givers for example.
  • Develop and agree good practice recommendations with respect to age appropriate patient education programs for pediatric and adolescent diabetes.
The work package Leader (Hospital des Enfants - Malades/ France) and his work group will be responsible to give an overview of age specific patient education programs in the EU. Finally it should be developed  good practice recommendations promoting age appropriate patient education programs across the EU.



   WP4       
Develop good practice recommendations on pediatric training programs for healthcare professionals
 

The objective of work package 4 shall support healthcare professionals in providing high quality specialised care to children and adolescents with diabetes.

The following tasks will be carried out in order to work towards the specific objective and related deliverables:
  • Carry out all managerial tasks to run the work package effectively, including kick-off and other work package management meetings.
  • Identify existing training programmes for healthcare professionals and build on experience of the ISPAD Science School for Health Professionals.
  • Develop and agree good practice recommendations with respect to pediatric training programs for healthcare professionals.
The work package Leader (Barts and the London NHS Trust/ UK) and his work group shall give an overview of healthcare professional training programs and systems in pediatric and adolescent diabetes in the EU. Finally it should be developed  good practice recommendations promoting age pediatric training programs for healthcare professionals in diabetes.


   WP5      
Develop a definition and criteria for centres of reference for pediatric and adolescent diabetes

The objective of work package 5 is to stimulate the development of "Centres of Reference" for pediatric and adolescent diabetes services in Europe.   

The following tasks will be carried out in order to work towards the specific objective and related deliverables:

  • Carry out all managerial tasks to run the work package effectively, including kick-off and other work package management meetings.

  • Conduct European assessment study, identifying and comparing existing centres of reference (organisation, scope, functioning) in other disease areas.

  • Draft conclusions on the basis of the assessment study.

The work package Leader (ISPAD/ GER) and his work group is responsible for presenting a definition and setting criteria for the development and recognition of centres of reference for pediatric and adolescent diabetes. They have to create a toolbox for the development and recognition of centres of reference for pediatric and adolescent diabetes services.
