Better control in Pediatric and Adolescent diabetes:

working to create Centres of Reference

Welcome to the SWEET - Project

A group of established European and national diabetes organisations have joined forces
to improve the diabetes management in children and adolescents.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Of the estimated 440.000 cases of type 1 diabetes in children worldwide, a fifth lives in Europe. Type 1 is growing by 3% per year in children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is also growing at an alarming rate and is often a delayed diagnosis in these groups.

The diagnosis of diabetes influences the organisation of daily life and quality of life extremely. Dealing with diabetes as a child and as family is a big challenge.
SWEET will enhance health and quality of life of children and young people affected by type 1 and type 2 diabetes in Europe by improving:

                                    ♦   secondary prevention

                                    ♦   early diagnosis and control

                                    ♦   effective management

SWEET will address these, e.g. by stimulating the exchange of information and good practice, developing recommendations for standards of care and education.
With this support, SWEET wishes to achieve something in the framework of the European Union which may have importance beyond the European boards:

The establishment of
Centers of Reference for Pediatric Diabetes (CORs)

The SWEET - Project is funded by the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC)
(in the past Public Health Executive Agency (PHEA)).
